Pet hair in any apartment or house, no matter the size, can be frustratingly hard to clean. Their hairs can also be incredibly fine, so picking it up on different floor types with normal vacuum cleaners don’t work. It’s why I chose the Dyson DC39 Animal Vacuum
Pets are constantly shed, so you need to clean every day. Dragging out a bulky, heavy vacuum cleaner every morning or evening isn’t ideal at all. After hearing good things from several friends and being fed up with my vacuum, I made the purchase.
A canister vacuum cleaner wouldn’t be my first choice as it is often heavy, bulky, and hard to store, especially in a smaller apartment. However, the Dyson DC39 Animal looks sleek and modern, and once the hose is detached, it morphs into a smaller, more storable apparatus.
I put together this Dyson DC39 Animal review to give you some information about the features, benefits, and pros and cons, and my overall verdict on it.
Features of Dyson DC39 Animal
The Dyson DC39 Animal has a plethora of features that make your cleaning easier and more effective. Some features are non-negotiable when it comes to a competent vacuum cleaner. Others aren’t needed, but make your life so much easier.
- Color: iron/purple
- Weight: 16.9 pounds
- Dimensions: 10.2 x 19.5 x 14.2 inches
Central Steering
My living room is a little crowded – I like a homier, more comfortable look and feel, so the popular minimalist décor trend has flown right past me. The downside to this is having to move sofas, chairs, tables, and comfort cushions around when cleaning.
With a bulky vacuum cleaner, this is a chore on its own. With the Dyson DC39 Animal Canister Vacuum central steering feature, I can clean the living room without having to do a complete remove because it moves around obstacles like a breeze.
The cyclone pack works with the base frame to make moving around easy, and the ball technology bypasses the limitations that come with fixed wheel vacuum cleaners.
Multiple Accessories
Since this is designed for pet hair cleaning, one of my key requirements was that it needed to pick up and clean pet hair seamlessly. I was not disappointed. The DC39 Animal has a mini turbine head that’s perfect for cleaning pet hair and dirt and debris in smaller spaces.
It also works well on stairs and car upholstery. Additional accessories include a stair tool and a combination tool, which converts to a brush tool ideal for dusting.
Triggerhead Tool
The biggest drawback with canister vacuum cleaners is that you have to bend down to adjust, move, or use the hose. Dyson has a fantastic reputation with innovation, so it’s no surprise that they’ve developed a vacuum cleaner that has the benefits of the canister cleaner without the issues.
The Dyson DC39 Animal has a turbine head that is controlled at the handle, so you don’t have to bend down. The control switches sit at the top of the hose, which makes for easier fingertip control. The controls allow you to switch from the brush bar for delicate rugs and hard floors to a greater suction for deep dust pickup in high-pile carpets.
Clear Bin
This one sounds simple, but it has made such a big difference to me that it’s worth mentioning as a top feature. Firstly, my previous vacuum cleaner had bags. Every time after I vacuumed, I had to check the bag to see if it was full. Doing this would send little escaping particles up into the air.
I kept having to throw away and buy new bags. The Dyson is bagless. With the bin, it’s reusable, which makes it more environmentally friendly. The best part? It’s clear. You don’t have to open some compartment or detach anything to check if it’s full. You can also see how much hair and dust your cleaner is picking up.
HEPA Air Filter Catches Allergens
For any allergy sufferers, the HEPA filters are a lifesaver. With the Dyson DC39 Animal, the cyclones capture tiny allergen particles like pollen, mold, and bacteria. A top tip is to leave your vacuum cleaner on for a few minutes without doing anything – you can even leave the room – and the HEPA filter will suck up some of the allergens in the air.
Benefits of the Dyson DC39 Animal
Consistent Suction
Where other vacuum cleaners use bags to trap dust and dirt, the Dyson DC39 Animal Vacuum uses a canister. Dust bags are privy to tiny holes that clog up with dust particles. As you use the vacuum cleaner, the airflow gets restricted by this clog, and the cleaner loses suction.
The Dyson DC39 Animal uses cyclone technology, so the air spins at incredibly high speeds, which reduces the likelihood of clogging. Everything the vacuum cleaner suctions up goes straight into the bin.
For the technical people out there – the Dyson vacuum cleaner can generate a force thousands of times the force of gravity, so that dirt is well and truly suctioned and trapped.
Suctioning on Carpets
Not all carpets are created equal, but I’ll cover both delicate rugs and high-pile carpets with this as I have both. I was slightly wary of using this on my delicate rugs, but with the brush tool attachment, it effectively picks up the dirt without damaging the rug.
High-pile carpets are notoriously difficult to clean, and mine is no exception. The Dyson DC39 performed significantly better than any other cleaner I’ve used on my high-pile carpets, thanks to the radial root cyclone technology.
Suctioning on Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are challenging to clean in a different way to carpets. It’s slightly slippery, so sometimes the brush doesn’t grip well enough to get all the fine dust and pet hair. The Dyson DC39 excels in this regard. The adaptable brush accessory is made for hardwood floors, and one smooth motion is enough to get all the dirt on the floor.
Pros
- Adjustable and maximizing suction power due to radial root cyclone technology
- Turbine head that is controlled at the handle, so no bending required
- HEPA filter system for picking up allergens
- 5-year parts warranty
Cons
- When you’re cleaning the brush, you need to disassemble it.
- It also gets hair quite often, so you need to clean it regularly.
- The brushes is bulky, so it doesn’t get to vacuuming edges and corners well enough.
Conclusion
I like the Dyson DC39 Animal Canister, and it’s definitely my favorite canister vacuum cleaner. It’s efficient at cleaning pet hair and at moving around obstacles. However, there are still better products on the market – although you’ll have to deal with a heftier price tag for those. For this price range, the Dyson is more than worth it.
Having to disassemble and clean the brush so often is a proper schlep, but it’s worth the proper clean. If you have pet hair flying around and you’re looking for something that will work well with capturing all of it and making your life easier, you should get the Dyson DC39 Animal.
